Fit for the Slopes?

Whether you’re a serious skier or just hit the slopes on an occasional weekend, now is the time to start getting in shape for the upcoming ski season. During the offseason, two or three nonconsecutive workout sessions a week will go a long way in reducing soreness and fatigue and getting those muscles in shape for zipping down the mountain – either on skis or a snowboard.

Exercises that help get your body ready for ache-less zigzags include balance, stretching, walking, running, aerobics, strengthening, squat jumps, jumping rope, sit-ups, leg crunches, yoga, pilates, plyometrics and cycling.

You’ll be glad you spent a few hours in preseason conditioning when you experience the payoffs: reduced risk of injury, performance improvement and increased enjoyment – so it’s time to get out there and start moving. Ski season will soon be upon us!

Check out Web sites such as www.skinet.com, www.nsaa.org and www.skiing.about.com for details, photos and illustrations of specific preseason exercises – and get in shape for your best season ever!

Remember to consult with your physician before beginning any exercise program.
